Penang to Satun

Journey completed in October 2009

One way to go from Penang to Thailand is:

Take the Ferry to Butterworth. (Free)

Take a bus to Alor Setar (10 Ringitt)

Take a bus into Kuah (5 Ringitt) and get transport to Kuala Perlis. (or get off at the Kuala Perlis turnoff and await a taxi or similar).

Any transport to Kuala Perlis. (Someone gave me a lift).

At the "Satun jetty" (not the main Langkawi jetty ) there is an immigration window. Check out of Malaysia and wait.

As soon a s six or so passengers are ready a "longtail" will take you to Satun in Thailand. This ferry ride to Satun cost Ringitt 20

Clear immigration in Satun and take a local bus or motorcycle into town.

Total journey time about 6 hours and it cost me 40 ringit with a great little longtail journey along the coast. Have the camera ready.

Totally legal and great fun.

Journey may be done in reverse.

  1. Tried to repeat this Journey in February 2014:
    - direct Bus from Butterworth to Kuala Perlis
    - "Satun Jetty" was hard to find: But its only 200-300 Meters "right" of the Ferry Jetty, hidden behind some industrial Buildings. Look for a sign saying "immigresen" or similar.

    - Because it was Chinese new Year (and Saturday Afternoon), there was no more Boat when we arrived there (around 5pm).
    - Ended up taking a Taxi to Panang Besar border, Minibus to Hat Yai, Minibus to Satun.
    - But your Trip should still be possible.
